Only two groups of cars participate in the 2022 Busan International Motor Show in Korea

Did you know that the Busan International Motor Show is currently underway in Korea? Chances are, you probably didn’t, and that’s because this year’s event turned out to be a shell of itself.

The event has long been shaping up to be quite different from previous years. In May, Mercedes-Benz and Renault announced that they would not participate in the event, despite their significant presence in the Korean automotive market. The show has fallen out of favor for so many automakers that only six brands from two car groups, including Hyundai, Kia and Genesis, as well as BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce, currently display their cars.

Korea Times notes that Hyundai Motor Group brought concepts like the Ioniq 6 and Kia EV9 to the event, while BMW showed off the 2 Series Active Tourer and Mini Electric.

While automakers who decided not to participate did not provide reasons, an auto industry official said Korea Timetables that the event organizers need to make it more attractive.

“The Busan Metropolitan City Government, the organizer of the auto show, should strive to make it more attractive so that auto brands are willing to attend,” the official said. “It takes billions of won to join the event. Taking a look at the world-famous auto shows around the world, they try to focus more on the electric car industry to keep attracting global auto brands.

The fall of the Busan International Motor Show was swift. The 2018 edition attracted no less than 19 brands, including 11 foreign car manufacturers.

The lack of car manufacturers at this event has prompted some information and communication technology companies to fill the void. One of them includes SK Telecom which is developing a flying car service.
